Mississauga News It's now three consecutive weekends of medals for Mississauga Wolverines basketball squads. And the Ontario Basketball Association-affiliated club saved its best for this past weekend (Feb. 27-28), as its major atom boys' squad earned gold at the Guelph CYO Basketball Major Atom Boys' Tournament. The Wolverines went undefeated, with double-digit wins in five straight games, beating host Guelph CYO Basketball Allstars 55-28 in the title game.
Along the way, they also bested Newman Youth 75-43, Kitchener-Waterloo Vipers 71-44, Blessed Sacrament 65-50 and Toronto Triple Threat 79-43. "The boys played with intensity, focus and great purpose. They work very hard in practice and it showed," said Mississauga head coach Richard Audu. At the Markham Unionville Minor Basketball Association Tournament, held Feb. 20-21, the Wolverines' major bantam boys' team grabbed a silver medal, dropping the title game 80-24 to CKATT, a ‘AAA’ team playing in a ‘AA’ tournament. In the preliminaries, Mississauga took out St. Thomas Shock 56-31, Barrie Royals 50-49 and York South Silver Knights 59-44. The lone blemish was a 53-41 loss to York North Basketball Avengers. The medal string began Feb. 12-14 when the novice boys took silver at the HoopDome Tournament, held in Downsview Park. In a hard-fought title game that came down to a last-second shot, the Wolverines lost to Caledon Cougars 27-26. "Our young players are quickly recognizing their potential against top-quality teams and played their hearts out down to the wire in the final," said head coach Adrion Smith. Earlier, Mississauga defeated Barrie Royals 36-26, Durham Bulldogs 33-18 and Vaughan Panthers 31-29. Mississauga Wolverines is a non-profit club affiliated with the OBA. It fields teams for boys and girls aged six to 15. |
